Hip Shushers

Posted on: July 8, 2007

Yes, there are librarians in today’s NY Times Styles section (and, as usual, Mom called to tell me about the article long before I had gotten that far into the paper — even though I usually go right to the style section first.) The article, A Hipper Crowd of Shushers is by Kara Jesella and has the description, “A new type of librarian is emerging: think Dewey Decimal meets Generation X.”

And while I’m not nearly as cool as the hip librarians they describe, I do identify with a lot of the things they were saying about the profession:

With so much of the job involving technology and with a focus now on finding and sharing information beyond just what is available in books, a new type of librarian is emerging…”

Many young librarians and library professors said that the work is no longer just about books but also about organizing and connecting people with information, including music and movies.

Ah, yes, I do like being a librarian 🙂

I think you are totally as cool as the Hipster Shushers!

Not everyone found that article to their liking, but I think it’s great press for a changing profession.

It’s a little surreal being back in Ffld. County, btw!
